Articulate Storyline and SCORM can carry a structured course into an LMS, while a Web Object or external service adds assessment, AI practice or another interaction. The learner experiences one journey, but the data may cross several systems. Test each handoff from both the learner and administrator views.
Before launch: agree the contract
Identify the course version, LMS launch method and the data each connected component is allowed to receive. Decide how learner identity is resolved, whether an external session or attempt reference is needed, and what constitutes completion. Confirm which system owns the score and where a trainer expects to see it.
Do not use a name displayed on screen as the sole link between records. A stable, permitted identifier and a separate attempt reference make retakes and support questions much easier to resolve.
During the activity: observe the transition
- Launch as an assigned learner, not only from an authoring preview.
- Check the embedded interaction at the actual LMS viewport, including a phone-sized screen where relevant.
- Confirm what happens when the learner leaves, reloads or returns to the course.
- Check how a slow or unavailable external service is explained.
- Verify that an unfinished activity cannot silently produce a final result.
After completion: reconcile the records
Compare what the learner sees with the LMS status, score, external service record and trainer report. If feedback is prepared asynchronously, the status should say that the report is still pending. If the learner repeats the activity, the new attempt should not erase or mislabel the earlier one.
Minimum test set
Use synthetic learners to test a normal completion, an interrupted activity, a repeat attempt, an external-service timeout, delayed feedback and a mismatch in learner reference. Record the expected outcome for each system before running the test. Then compare actual records and resolve discrepancies rather than treating one green screen as overall success.
The integration is ready only when administrators can answer three practical questions: who completed which attempt, what result is final, and what needs action when those answers are not yet available.
Is this handoff familiar?
We can start by mapping what happens today, who owns each record and what a useful result would look like.
